A True Guardian of Waitukubuli Heritage, One Step at a Time

I have had the distinct honor of dancing with this troupe since its inception in 2009, when I was just 16 years old. Over the past 17 years, I have seen the transformative power of this organization firsthand. I’ve watched myself, my peers, and the younger generation discover their identities through movement and music. Sabina’s dedication to showcasing the beauty of Dominican culture is unmatched. In a world where traditional arts can easily be lost over time, she has made it her mission to hand down these sacred dances to those of us living abroad. Her leadership ensures that the rhythm, history, and soul of Dominica remain vibrant and accessible to the community here. For me, this isn’t just about performances. It’s personal. I’ve grown up in this troupe. I’ve since watched my niece find her confidence through these dances, and now I have the privilege of seeing my own son take his place in this troupe. There is no feeling quite like seeing your child carry on the same traditions you started learning nearly a lifetime ago. It’s a full-circle moment that wouldn’t be possible without Sabina’s vision.
